In our quest to eat healthy, it’s great to learn that something that is good for us is also perfectly fine to eat conventionally grown. While strawberries and apples are loaded with harmful pesticides when not bought organic, avocados are free from those toxins.
That’s really great news considering we might all need to up our avocado consumption. Did you know not only do avocados contain healthy fats that are good for your heart, but they also are a nutrient powerhouse and can actually help you manage your weight. According to this article at Mercola.com, eating just half of an avocado, “can satisfy you for hours, and can curb your cravings for between-meal snacks.”
And in case guacamole is the only thing that comes to mind when you think of avocados, think again.
Here are some of my favorite ways to use avocado:
- Cut up over eggs with some salsa or Valentina hot sauce
- Sliced on a sandwich with some grilled chicken
- In a salad with just lime juice and salt as dressing
- Ceviche – A delicious, healthy, refreshing seafood dish usually prepared with diced shrimp or firm white fish that has been marinated in lime juice until it’s “cooked” by the citric acid. Then it’s drained, and you add diced tomatoes, jalapeños, cilantro and avocado, along with salt and more fresh lime juice to taste.
Actually, considering we eat a fair amount of comida Mexicana in our house, we use avocados all different kinds of ways, but if you need some simpler ideas, Betty Crocker has a few interesting ones.
